Senior DBA

My client, a leading global Professional Services organisation based in Central London is looking for a Senior DBA, to form part of the Database Development team.

The focus of the role will be to manage and maintain the smooth operation of the Database Administration services in support of critical application platforms. The role involves working closely with other Infrastructure teams as well as the internal software developers and end users.

The role will involve technical management of the outsourced DBA managed service contract, and the opportunity to grow an offshore team to deliver excellent internally based Database Administration services.

Responsibilities

Your work falls into three primary categories:

Database Management

  • Checking of databases for consistency, updating statistics, rebuilding indexes and managing space within the databases
  • Control user access and security permissions
  • Database troubleshooting, tuning and performance optimisation
  • Administration, implementation and support of High Availability Always-On
  • Perform space management
  • Perform capacity planning of total resources available from underlying physical hardware
  • Establishing and maintaining sound backup and recovery policies and procedures
  • Provide input into the management of database licensing
  • Facilitate the creation of development, staging and production database ecosystems and the migration of those instances between environments

SQL Development:

  • SQL code review with the developers, or to provide advice on SQL related tasks
  • Implementing database design using industry standard methodologies and best practices
  • Development / performance tuning and optimisation of queries, views and stores procedures
  • SQL Source code management

Quality of service

  • Maintain a high level availability of services and minimise the risk of exposure through continual monitoring of key systems.
  • Maintain database documentation, including standards, procedures and definitions

In order to be considered for the position, candidates should possess:

  • 5+ years of SQL Server Database Administration experience
  • Expert in modern Cloud architectures with experience in Azure
  • Hands on knowledge of isolation levels, collations and resolving deadlocks
  • Very strong backup and recovery principles
  • Practical experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service
  • Expert in HA & DR principles using SQL Always ON Availability Groups
  • Demonstrated experience in querying data (SQL) and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
  • Ability to write complicated yet efficient SQL queries and stored procedures
  • Sound knowledge of relational databases and their structures
  • Ability to create data models for the integration of multiple systems
  • Experience in Microsoft SSIS, SSRS, SSAS and/or PowerBI is desirable
