In the last two years, we have seen an incredible rise in the number of applications available on our phones.

There has been an explosion in the popularity of Android, a viable competitor of Apple, but of late there has been growth in another area of mobile development – Responsive Design. As a result, the way the industry is recruiting Front End developers is rapidly changing.

In years gone by, leading companies would not have entertained the idea of developing a “one-size fits all” website. But now with the improvements in responsive design – allowing for a single website to be developed that will adapt or ‘respond’ to the size of the screen you are visiting – we now see far less mobile websites being built.

What does that mean for the recruiting world?

For a contractor, it is now essential that Responsive Design is something that you are not only aware of but are utilising in commercial environments. Without it, day rates will have to drop to counter the lack of experience.

For an employer, if you are not thinking about responsive design in your front end development, stop your recruitment now and get the necessary budget as you will need it. You will undoubtedly get what you pay for in the development world.
