Job Description.

Boston Hale is working with a leading international law firm to appoint a Practice Innovation & Knowledge Attorney to its central innovation team.

This is a non-practicing, non-billing role for a qualified attorney with substantive litigation experience who wants to apply that legal background to AI, legal technology, knowledge management and the transformation of legal service delivery.

The successful candidate will work closely with partners, attorneys, practice leaders and business-services teams to understand how litigation work is performed, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement practical AI, technology, knowledge and workflow solutions.

A strong understanding of the current legal AI market is important. Candidates should be familiar with platforms such as Legora, Harvey, CoCounsel, Lexis+ Protégé, Vincent AI, Microsoft Copilot or comparable legal AI applications, and understand how these tools can be applied to real legal workflows.

Key responsibilities

  • Work directly with litigators and practice leaders to understand workflows, pain points and opportunities for improvement.

  • Identify and develop practical AI, automation and legal technology use cases across litigation and investigations.

  • Develop AI-enabled workflows around areas such as drafting, research, document analysis, discovery, investigations, case strategy and matter management.

  • Assess how platforms such as Legora, Harvey, CoCounsel and other legal AI tools can be used effectively within different litigation workflows.

  • Help attorneys develop effective prompting strategies and understand the appropriate use of generative AI.

  • Initiate, scope and manage practice innovation and knowledge projects.

  • Run pilots and Proof of Concept exercises, including defining success criteria, testing solutions and assessing practical application.

  • Work with legal technology vendors and internal technology teams to translate lawyer requirements into workable solutions.

  • Support implementation, training and adoption of new AI and legal technology platforms.

  • Deliver workshops, demonstrations, office hours and other practical support to attorneys.

  • Understand client requirements and restrictions around the use of AI and help practice teams operate within those parameters.

  • Improve access to precedents, know-how, model documents, matter experience and other practice content.

  • Identify opportunities to extract and structure useful data from existing documents, repositories and systems.

  • Support broader knowledge management and AI-enabled knowledge initiatives.

  • Work with early adopters and practice teams to embed successful tools and workflows into day-to-day legal practice.

  • Monitor developments across legal AI, litigation technology and the wider innovation market.

What we're looking for

You will be a qualified attorney with approximately five years or more of legal experience, including substantive client-facing litigation work. Experience within a leading U.S. or international law firm would be highly advantageous.

Relevant backgrounds could include:

  • Commercial Litigation

  • Complex Litigation

  • Investigations

  • White Collar and Government Investigations

  • Regulatory Enforcement

  • Arbitration

  • Dispute Resolution

  • Other sophisticated contentious practices

You may already be working in Practice Innovation, Knowledge, Legal Technology, Legal Operations or Legal Engineering.

Alternatively, you may still be a practicing litigator who has become significantly involved in AI, legal technology, workflow improvement or innovation initiatives and is now interested in moving into a dedicated innovation role.

AI and legal technology experience

An interest in AI alone will not be sufficient.

The firm is looking for candidates who can demonstrate practical involvement in improving how legal work is delivered. This could include:

  • Implementing AI or legal technology within a litigation practice.

  • Developing AI-enabled legal workflows.

  • Running pilots or Proof of Concept projects.

  • Working with platforms such as Legora, Harvey, CoCounsel or similar tools.

  • Participating meaningfully in AI or innovation steering groups.

  • Redesigning legal workflows or processes.

  • Introducing document or process automation.

  • Working directly with legal technology vendors.

  • Developing knowledge systems, precedents or structured know-how.

  • Training lawyers on AI and new technology.

  • Driving adoption of new tools and working practices.

Technical capability

This is not a software engineering role and candidates are not expected to build applications or AI agents themselves.

What matters is the ability to understand sophisticated litigation workflows, identify where technology can improve them, evaluate the capabilities of different legal technology platforms, and work with lawyers, vendors and technical specialists to turn those opportunities into practical solutions.

The successful candidate will need strong stakeholder-management skills and the credibility to work directly with partners and experienced attorneys.
